To the world at large, Doc Savage is a strange, mysterious figure of glistening bronze skin and golden eyes.  To his amazing co-adventurers -- the five greatest brains ever assembled in one group --he is a man of superhuman strength and protean genius, whose life is dedicated to the destruction of evil-doers.  To his fans, he is the greatest adventure hero of all time, whose fantastic exploits are unequaled for hair-raising thrills, breathtaking escapes, and blood-curdling excitement!

StealthSkater note:  While attempting to weave through the maze of fact and fiction regarding the "X-files" folklore, I frequently complained that it would probably take a "Sherlock Holmes" or a "Doc Savage" to sort things out.  When some readers didn't know who the latter was … well, I was stunned.  So I took on a project to archive these long out-of-print works that stirred many an imagination in the days before television and movies.  And quite by accident, I discovered that many of the fantastic weapons/threats that Doc "faced" were based on the vibrational and scalar wave theories of John Keely and the great inventor Nikola Tesla, who were very prominent during that day.  Some of today's "alternative" physicists still claim that portions of those theories are deliberately suppressed for reasons unknown.

Doc Savage's Amazing Crew

William Harper "Johnny" Littlejohn -- the bespectacled scientist who was the world's greatest living expert on geology and archaeology.

 Colonel Johny "Renny" Renwick -- the favorite sport of this engineering genius was pounding his massive fists through heavy paneled doors.

 Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Blodgett "Monk" Mayfair -- only a few inches over 5 feet tall and yet over 260 pounds.  His brutish exterior concealed the mind of a world-renowned chemist.

 Major Thomas J. "Long Tom" Roberts  was the physical weakling of the crowd but a wizard at electricity at radio.

 Brigadier General Theodore Marley "Ham" Brooks -- slender and waspy and the greatest lawyer Harvard ever produced -- was never without his ominous, black sword-cane.

 With their leader, they would go anywhere, fight anyone, dare everything -- all-the-while seeking excitement and perilous adventure !

The adventures of Doc Savage took place after World War I and originally appeared in magazine format in the 1930's.  Note that this timeframe was well before jet planes and the semiconductor technology we are accustomed to today.  In Doc's time, the fastest planes were 400-mph propeller jobs and vacuum tube technology still ruled radio.  Lester Dent created the characters and wrote under the penname of 'Kenneth Robeson'.

     Bantam Books began re-releasing these stories in paperback format in the late 60's.  Images of Doc and his men were "modernized" to today's era although the stories remained true to their original versions.

     In many ways, Dent was a real-life "Doc Savage".  He had a HAM radio license as well as his pilot's, electrician's, and plumber's.  He was also an avid mountain climber, deep sea diver, amateur archeologist, dairy farmer, gold prospector, aerial photographer, and member of a select "by-invitation-only" international explorer's organization.  Much of the richness of Lester Dent's many adventures were cleverly woven into the Doc Savage novels.

     Later authors "borrowed" from the Doc Savage adventures.  One of the most evident is Superman's "Fortress of Solitude", which was taken from Doc's previously established one of the same name and in the same (North Pole) location.  Also both Superman and Doc Savage had the same first name ("Clark").

     The number of episodes climbed well above 100, and other authors -- using the same penname -- continued Dent's visions.  For a biography of Lester Dent and the other "ghost writers" using the penname of 'Kenneth Robeson' =>

        Doc Savage -- the Movie

     TV's "Tarzan" Ron Ely starred in the 1975 Hollywood adaptation of "Doc Savage - The Man of Bronze".  Most reviews feel it was poorly-written and poorly-cast.

      There were hopes that Arnold Schwarzenegger would star in the next movie.  But his recent election may have squelched such hopes.

     Where can you find someone with the star appeal of Arnold and a powerful body to go along with it?

My suggestion would be former NFL player Howie Long.  If bodybuilder-type muscles are required in close-ups, he can use a "body double" like Julia Roberts did in the "Pretty Woman" poster and Kim Basinger did for "My StepMother is an Alien".

           The Man In The Glass  (Dale Wimbrow, 1895-1954)

     When you get what you want in your struggle for self, and the World makes you king for a day;

                        Just go to the mirror and look at yourself, and see what that man has to say.

     For it isn't your father or mother or wife whose judgment upon you must pass;

                        The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life is the one staring back from the glass.

    Some people might think you're a straight-shootin' chum and call you a wonderful guy;

                       But the Man in the Glass says you're only a bum if you can't look him straight in the eye.

    He's the fellow to please -- never mind all the rest! -- for he's with you all the way to the end;

                        And you've already passed your most dangerous test if the guy in the glass is your friend.

    You may fool the whole World down the pathway of years and get pats on-the-back as you pass;

                       But your final reward will be heartache and tears ... if you've cheated the Man in the Glass !
